The 10 Books That Changed My Ways Of Thinking & Writing

Posted by Nora Quick on Friday, December 23, 2011, In : Influences
Everyone should read. No, I'm not saying that as an author, or even as a bookworm, I'm saying that as a human. Stories are what make us dream and grow, what take us away from daily stress, what builds our imaginations. Something John Waters has said resonates with me: "If you go home with someone and they don't have books, don't fuck 'em!"

Books shape us every bit as much as experience. What follows in short is a list of the books I feel have made me who I am:

The Red Badge Of Courage

Writing At The Holidays

Posted by Nora Quick on Saturday, December 17, 2011, In : Writing Advice
Finding time to write this time of year is a tough thing, even for someone who doesn't do most holiday parties like me. There is shopping for the New Year's Eve getup, all the birthdays (for one I am flashmobbing a Taco Bell tonight, you know, like ya do), and all the normal things make it tough to keep focused on writing. Add in what most people face: holiday baking, travel, Christmas shopping, and it's a nightmare.

I would suggest my personal strategy: save up your anger and write death scen...

On Book Titles & Sex Advice

Posted by Nora Quick on Monday, December 12, 2011, In : Strangeness
I've had a strange life journey. I'm 31 and not yet ready to write my biography, and frankly if I tried I doubt anyone would believe me. Of the many strange paths I've wandered down, one was studying psychology and earning 3 degrees in it. This might not sound strange, but in proper context with my other various jobs it always surprises people. I extensively studied human sexuality and I'll admit to a vast wealth of personal experience with the subject and so it has suited me as the go-to per...

Performance Tonight

Posted by Nora Quick on Friday, December 9, 2011, In : events
Tonight's the night I perform my spoken-word piece La Belle Mort at the Long Nights Moon: Goth-Erotic Celebration of the Arts Nite I at the wonderful 1901 Gallery in Chicago (1901 Belmont). I'll be on at 10:45 (ish). This is a free event with music, DJs, artists, crafts, and a general Gothic celebration. No cover and all are welcome!

Combining my preparation for this and my copy writing job I'm a week behind on my literotica writings and a week behind on my erotic romance novel (still untitled...

Necrophilia

Posted by Nora Quick on Saturday, December 3, 2011, In : writing options
More and more random opportunities keep coming my way. This is the magic of networking, again, it can be Heaven or Hell.

This time, I was invited to an event on Facebook by a friend only to discover my name was on the flyer for performing spoken word. Now, like most writers, I'm an introvert. Don't confuse this with being shy! I am not shy, I just get quiet in groups. Introverts try to judge the reaction of the people around them to whatever they say and in large groups where I don't know ever...

Fixing Characters

Posted by Nora Quick on Thursday, December 1, 2011, In : Writing Advice
Back in 2008 I taught creative writing, and most of my students had been writing most of their adult lives, and wanted to learn tricks. There really aren't many tricks to writing fiction, but there are simple guidelines. Most classes will try to tell you there are firm rules, and yes, when it comes to grammar, spelling, and punctuation there are (if you can see what was wrong with the punctuation in the previous clauses then you are a master of punctuation!). When it comes to style, voice, or...
